Xiaomi Gears Up for Extended-Range EV Dominance
Chinese tech powerhouse Xiaomi is officially expanding its electric vehicle portfolio beyond battery-only models. The company has received crucial regulatory approval from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) to commence production of extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), marking a pivotal moment in its automotive journey.
This approval clears the path for Xiaomi’s first EREV model, a formidable full-size SUV internally codenamed "Kunlun N3." Measuring over 5.3 meters, this vehicle is designed to directly challenge market leaders like Li Auto's popular L9. The "Kunlun N3" is expected to feature a 70+ kWh battery, delivering an impressive 400-500 km of pure electric range (CLTC), complemented by a range-extending internal combustion engine for ultimate long-distance peace of mind.
The strategic shift into EREVs responds to their surging popularity in China, particularly within the large family SUV segment where range anxiety remains a key consideration. Slated for a second-half 2026 launch, possibly under a new "Skynomad" sub-brand, Xiaomi aims to capture a significant share of this lucrative market and solidify its position as a major player in the rapidly evolving EV landscape.
