Solid-State EV Batteries Hit North American Roads for Real-World Testing
The long-awaited promise of solid-state electric vehicle batteries is no longer confined to the lab! In a groundbreaking development, Stellantis and US-based Factorial Energy have officially commenced on-road testing of solid-state battery technology in North America.
This pivotal moment sees Factorial's innovative FEST (Factorial Electrolyte System Technology) solid-state battery cells integrated into a Dodge Charger Daytona development vehicle, marking the first time such advanced batteries are being tested in a North American EV.
The benefits of this next-generation power source are compelling:
- Significantly longer driving ranges, potentially exceeding 600 miles on a single charge.
- Ultra-fast charging, achieving 15% to 90% in a mere 18 minutes.
- Robust performance across extreme temperatures, from -22°F to 113°F (-30°C to 45°C).
- Lower production costs and enhanced safety.
Factorial has already validated these 77Ah FEST cells, demonstrating impressive energy density and cycle life. The move from theoretical validation to practical road application required advanced engineering from both companies, optimizing pack design and control systems for Stellantis' STLA Large platform. This collaborative effort could truly redefine the capabilities of future electric vehicles, with Factorial also working with Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, and Kia to bring this "gamechanger" technology to market.
