Scaling Green Logistics
UltraTech Cement, the world's leading cement producer outside of China, is significantly expanding its commitment to sustainable infrastructure. The company has officially announced an ambitious expansion of its logistics fleet, which will integrate over 600 heavy-duty electric trucks (eHGVs) by December 2026. This move represents a major milestone in the industrial sector, as the firm seeks to eliminate the carbon footprint associated with its extensive material transport network.
The scale of this operation is substantial. These 600 electric trucks will be tasked with transporting more than five million metric tonnes of clinker—the essential precursor to cement—and other raw materials every single year. The deployment strategy covers a diverse range of Indian regions, including Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, and Odisha. By transitioning these routes to electric power, UltraTech projects an annual reduction of over 117,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions, which the company equates to saving roughly 39 million liters of diesel annually.
Collaborative Supply Chain Procurement
To execute this rapid electrification, UltraTech has entered into strategic service agreements with a wide array of domestic and international electric vehicle manufacturers. The list of partners includes industry titans such as Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland, alongside specialized providers like IPLTech, Energy In Motion, and Sany. This multi-vendor approach ensures that UltraTech can leverage the specific expertise of various OEMs to optimize its logistics performance across different terrains and operational requirements.
K C Jhanwar, Managing Director of UltraTech Cement, highlighted that the company's objective is to extend sustainability well beyond the boundaries of its manufacturing plants. By focusing on the 'mine-to-plant' and inter-plant transit segments, the company is systematically addressing the most carbon-intensive links in its value chain. This latest initiative builds upon a growing foundation of green logistics; the company already operates over 850 vehicles in its green fleet, which includes a mix of CNG and electric units.
