Operated by the Organization of Urban Transportation of Thessaloniki (OASTH), these heavy-duty vehicles are set to transform the city's transit landscape, particularly in western districts. With this latest delivery, the city's electric bus fleet has expanded to approximately 160 units, reinforcing its commitment to reducing urban carbon emissions.
The expansion is part of a broader initiative to modernize the city's transit infrastructure. In addition to the new hardware, OASTH has bolstered its operations by hiring 170 new drivers to support the increased service frequency and the launch of new routes. These buses are currently servicing four primary routes: X1, 12, 27, and 32, which serve as critical arteries for commuter movement across the city.
Technical Specifications and Passenger Experience
While official model designations were not explicitly disclosed by local authorities, the fleet is widely believed to be composed of the Yutong U18 series. These 18-meter-long articulated vehicles are designed to handle high-capacity urban transit, capable of transporting up to 130 passengers per bus. This capacity makes them an ideal choice for high-traffic corridors, balancing mass transit efficiency with the benefits of zero-emission technology.
The technical capabilities of these buses are tailored for long shifts without frequent interruptions. They boast a stated operational range of 300 kilometers per charge, ensuring they can complete standard daily routes on a single charge cycle. Depending on the specific configuration chosen for the city, the vehicles are engineered with significant battery overhead—estimated between 528 and 704 kWh. To ensure passenger comfort, the buses are equipped with modern climate control, high-efficiency ventilation, and user-friendly tilt-and-turn windows.
