Pacific Gas and Electric expands its vehicle-to-everything (V2X) program, enabling more electric vehicle owners to monetize their vehicles' stored energy.

The West Coast's largest utility, Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), is broadening its vehicle-to-everything (V2X) bidirectional charging program. This move now allows owners of many new electric vehicles, including models from Chevy and Volvo, to participate in grid support and earn money by sharing their car's battery power.

Under this initiative, PG&E aims to reduce energy bills for EV drivers while bolstering the grid. The updated program includes popular electric vehicles (EVs) such as the new Chevy Bolt EV, Volvo EX90, and Kia EV9, in addition to previously compatible models from Nissan, Polestar, and General Motors like the Chevy Silverado EV and Equinox EV.

David Almeida, PG&E's director of clean energy transportation, stated, "This expansion is all about choice. By broadening the mix of eligible vehicles and chargers, we're helping our customers access this valuable technology, while also offering them a way to turn their EV into a home backup and a grid asset." This sentiment underscores the program's dual purpose of enhancing sustainability and offering financial incentives.

Program Details

  • Eligible Vehicles: New Chevy Bolt EV, Cadillac Celestiq, Escalade IQL, Nissan Leaf (previous generation), Volvo EX90, Polestar 3, and Kia EV9 and EV6.
  • Incentives: Residential customers can receive up to $2,500 for installation, increasing to $3,000 for those in disadvantaged communities. An additional $1,500 Early Adopter incentive is available for the first 250 customers. For businesses, incentives can reach up to $4,500, or $5,000 in disadvantaged communities.
  • Enrollment Period: Open until June 2027.

EVs serve as large power banks on wheels, capable of absorbing electricity during off-peak hours and sending it back to the grid during peak demand. This capability could alleviate pressure on the grid and provide backup power during outages. However, accessing this functionality requires specialized hardware. For instance, a Tesla Cybertruck can transmit power back using Tesla’s Universal Wall Connector and its Powershare Gateway system. GM models can utilize PowerShift chargers, while Kia's EVs can connect through Wallbox Quasar 2 chargers. PG&E lists all compatible vehicles and chargers on its website.

How much can customers earn from this arrangement? By charging their EVs when electricity prices are low (often overnight) and sending power back to the grid when prices peak, owners can significantly reduce their energy costs. For example, PG&E's hourly electricity rates fluctuate based on varying factors, presenting customers with earning potential between 5 cents and 50 cents per kilowatt-hour based on recent data.

Despite the benefits, V2X technology faces challenges, including the need for compatible systems and equipment. Currently, most programs are pilot initiatives, including PG&E's ongoing efforts, which began years ago. The expansion represents a key step in making bidirectional charging more accessible to a broader range of EV owners.
