Ford's Affordable EV Pickup Spotted in the Wild!
Ford's much-anticipated entry into the affordable electric truck market just made its public debut, with a prototype of the sub-$30,000 EV pickup spotted testing in Long Beach. This sighting comes shortly after Ford hinted at public road tests, marking a significant step towards its projected 2027 launch.
The camouflaged prototype reveals a midsize, four-door design that appears notably compact, even "tiny" compared to larger pickups, yet boasts a surprisingly spacious second row. While the bed is modestly sized, it's practical enough for substantial cargo. Up front, the vehicle showcased advanced camera and radar sensors, hinting at modern driver-assist features.
Affordability Meets Innovation
Positioned to deliver exceptional value, Ford claims this new EV will offer more passenger space than a Toyota RAV4, including a versatile front trunk (frunk) and its rear bed. It's also expected to boast a lower total cost of ownership than a Tesla Model Y, all while starting at an aggressive price point around $30,000.
This pickup will be the inaugural model built on Ford’s Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform, designed to revolutionize manufacturing efficiency through techniques like megacasting, drastically reducing part counts. Furthermore, its aerodynamic design is engineered to be over 15% more efficient than current pickups, promising extended range and reduced running costs. Ford will also lead in domestic prismatic LFP battery production, further enhancing affordability and interior space. Production is slated for Ford's Louisville Assembly plant, with customer deliveries anticipated in 2027.
