Researchers have identified a fossilized ape that appears more closely related to modern apes than any previously discovered species from the same era in East Africa.

For decades, East Africa has been regarded as the primary cradle of ape evolution. However, this new analysis suggests that North Africa and the Middle East may have served as a critical evolutionary crossroads. The findings indicate that the lineage leading to gibbons, orangutans, gorillas, chimpanzees, and humans might have established its early roots in these northern regions before diversifying further.
