Researchers have developed an experimental antiviral pill that could significantly change how health officials manage measles outbreaks. In recent laboratory studies, the drug successfully prevented a measles-like virus from spreading via air or close contact among test subjects.
Effective Pre- and Post-Exposure
The study, conducted using ferrets as models for human transmission, demonstrated that the treatment is effective when administered shortly before or after exposure to the virus. Beyond prevention, the drug also shortened the overall duration of the illness and reduced the window of time during which infected subjects remained contagious.
Complementing Vaccination Efforts
While vaccines remain the primary defense against measles, scientists believe this oral antiviral could serve as a vital secondary layer of protection. By reducing the viral load and transmission window, the drug could make localized outbreaks much easier to contain, particularly in areas with lower vaccination rates or among vulnerable populations who cannot be vaccinated.
