The Evolution of the ID. UNYX Series
Volkswagen has officially opened pre-sales for its latest electric vehicle in China, the ID. UNYX 09. Developed by Volkswagen Anhui in collaboration with Chinese automotive tech giant Xpeng, the new model marks a significant step in VW's localized electrification strategy. While the German automaker classifies the vehicle as a GT coupé, its generous dimensions—measuring 5.08 meters in length with a 3.03-meter wheelbase—place it firmly in the premium electric sedan segment. Priced starting at 199,900 Yuan (approximately €26,000), the ID. UNYX 09 is positioned as a highly competitive offering for the Chinese market, though the manufacturer has confirmed that the vehicle will not be exported to Europe.
Under the hood, the ID. UNYX 09 showcases a formidable powertrain. The base rear-wheel-drive model produces a robust 230 kW, while the all-wheel-drive variant adds a secondary 140 kW motor to the front axle, pushing total output to 370 kW. These motors are powered by a 92 kWh LFP battery supplied by CATL. This high-capacity pack enables an impressive range of up to 755 km under the CLTC test cycle, ensuring that long-distance touring remains a viable and convenient reality for owners.
Technology Integration and Xpeng Synergy
Perhaps the most compelling aspect of the ID. UNYX 09 is its deep reliance on Xpeng’s advanced technology stack. By leveraging Xpeng’s proven vehicle platform, VW has equipped the car with high-end driver assistance capabilities. The vehicle is powered by Xpeng’s Turing AI chip, which boasts a massive 750 TOPS of computing power. This hardware supports a sophisticated suite of sensors, including 11 cameras, three millimeter-wave radars, and 12 ultrasonic sensors, allowing for advanced Navigation on Autopilot (NOA) in both urban and motorway environments.
The interior of the ID. UNYX 09 is built around a digital-first philosophy, prioritizing connectivity and immersive user experiences. A standout feature is the sprawling 85-inch augmented reality head-up display, which provides navigation prompts across three lanes of traffic. Complementing the visual experience is a 20-speaker premium audio system. Furthermore, the vehicle offers advanced parking automation, including remote-controlled parking and a 'memory parking' feature that enables the car to reverse along a path it has previously traveled.
Design Philosophy: The Wolf-Like Aesthetic
Beyond the technical prowess, the ID. UNYX 09 introduces a unique design language described by Volkswagen as “wolf-like aesthetics.” This is most visible in the vehicle's front fascia, which features high-resolution DLP matrix projection headlights. These lights do more than illuminate the road; they project active safety cues, such as lane-keeping lines and vehicle width markings, directly onto the pavement to assist the driver at night.
A notable visual touch is the inclusion of a wolf’s head emblem on the vehicle exterior. This branding serves as a direct nod to the city of Wolfsburg, Volkswagen’s global headquarters. By blending this German heritage with Eastern design symmetries, VW is attempting to capture the cultural prestige of the brand while delivering a product that feels distinctly modern and tailored to the preferences of Chinese consumers.
