Ottawa’s Path to Zero Emissions
The transition to sustainable urban mobility in Canada has hit a significant milestone. OC Transpo, the transit operator serving the Ottawa and Gatineau region, has officially placed a follow-up order for 120 LFSe+ electric buses from Nova Bus, a subsidiary of the Volvo Group. This strategic procurement marks a major step forward in the region's Zero-Emission Bus program, which aims to convert the entire fleet to electric powertrains by 2036.
With this latest acquisition, the total number of electric buses ordered for the region has climbed to 175 units. The delivery process is scheduled to be phased, with completion expected by the third quarter of 2027. All vehicles will be manufactured and assembled domestically in Canada, underscoring a commitment to bolstering the local industrial supply chain while meeting stringent environmental targets.
The LFSe+ Platform: Engineered for the Great North
The backbone of this transit expansion is the Nova Bus LFSe+ platform. Specifically designed to handle the challenges of urban environments, the model has garnered a reputation for resilience in extreme weather conditions. Given the harsh winters often faced by Ottawa’s public transit network, the vehicle’s ability to maintain performance and thermal efficiency in sub-zero temperatures is a critical factor for the operator.
Beyond the hardware itself, the partnership between Nova Bus and OC Transpo extends into a comprehensive support ecosystem. The manufacturer is providing more than just buses; the agreement includes technical staff training, infrastructure optimization for fleet charging, and ongoing operational support to ensure seamless integration into existing transit schedules. This holistic approach is becoming an industry standard as cities move away from piecemeal electric vehicle adoption toward fully integrated, fleet-wide charging networks.
Why It Matters
- Decarbonization Targets: The project is a centerpiece of OC Transpo’s goal to achieve a fully zero-emission bus fleet by 2036.
- Economic Impact: By keeping manufacturing and assembly within Canada, the order supports local jobs and reinforces the domestic EV manufacturing sector.
- Proven Reliability: The LFSe+ platform is already in service with over 500 units deployed across Canada, proving its capability in real-world, high-traffic scenarios.
- Scalability: The collaborative framework, which includes infrastructure support and maintenance, provides a blueprint for other North American cities looking to modernize their transit operations.
This long-standing collaboration, which began in 2017, continues to yield results. Upon completion of these deliveries, Nova Bus will have supplied more than 400 buses of various types to the Ottawa region, solidifying a partnership that serves as a cornerstone for Canadian public transport development.
