Tesla appears to be strengthening the security and accountability measures for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) suite. Code discovered within the latest iOS app update suggests that the company is preparing to implement a driver verification step using the vehicle's internal cabin camera.
Identity Verification Before Autonomy
The discovery points to a system where the cabin camera scans the person in the driver's seat to confirm their identity against authorized user profiles. If the system fails to recognize the driver or determines they are not authorized to use the feature, FSD activation will be blocked.
According to the findings, users would receive a failure notification directly within the Tesla app if the verification process is unsuccessful. This move could be aimed at preventing unauthorized use of the advanced driver-assistance system and ensuring that only drivers familiar with the software's limitations are operating it.
Enhanced Safety and Personalization
While Tesla has already used the cabin camera for driver attentiveness monitoring, this shift toward identity verification adds a new layer of biometric security. Beyond safety, this could also streamline the loading of individual driver preferences and settings tied to specific FSD profiles.
