NASA’s Swift Observatory has recorded a monumental cosmic event: a supermassive black hole shredding a star in a distant galaxy. Located more than 30,000 light-years from its galaxy's center, this wandering black hole triggered a flare so intense that it briefly outshone its entire host galaxy in ultraviolet light.
A Rare Tidal Disruption Event
The phenomenon, known as a tidal disruption event, occurred when a star ventured too close to the gravitational pull of the black hole. The resulting explosion of energy released light equivalent to 10 billion suns, providing researchers with a unique opportunity to study these elusive celestial bodies.
Insights into Wandering Black Holes
Data from the Swift Observatory suggests the black hole possesses a mass approximately one million times that of our Sun. Its position far from the galactic core is particularly notable, offering new insights into how 'wandering' black holes interact with their environments outside of the traditional central hubs of galaxies.
