A New Chapter for the Mercedes-Benz GLA
Mercedes-Benz has officially entered a new era for its compact SUV lineup as series production of the all-electric GLA gets underway at the company’s Rastatt facility. This launch marks a significant strategic pivot for the brand, which is consolidating its nomenclature. While previous generations separated electric variants into the 'EQA' line, the new GLA nameplate will now encompass all drivetrain types, including battery-electric, hybrid, and combustion-engine models.
The move to prioritize the electric variant in the production schedule—ahead of its traditional counterparts—underscores Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to its electrification roadmap. Based on the advanced MMA (Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture) platform, the new GLA is designed to be a leader in its class, offering up to 657 kilometers of range and industry-leading charging capabilities of up to 320 kW. With an entry price point starting at approximately €48,599, the automaker is positioning this model as a highly competitive offering in the premium compact SUV segment.
Technological Integration and Manufacturing Excellence
The manufacturing process at the Rastatt plant represents a masterclass in modern, digitized automotive assembly. According to Mercedes-Benz, the production lines are deeply integrated with the MB.OS operating system, artificial intelligence, and the MO360 ecosystem. Currently, assembly is centered in Hall 4.0, but the company has earmarked a 'low' three-digit million euro investment to modernize Assembly Hall 4.1. This secondary site is slated to come online in 2027. Notably, the planning for this renovation leverages 'digital twin' technology, a sophisticated simulation method that allows engineers to model the construction process virtually to shave time and costs off the project.

The success of the new GLA rests on a highly orchestrated internal supply chain, ensuring that the heart of the vehicle—its electric powertrain—remains a proprietary, high-quality asset. Key components are sourced from within the Mercedes-Benz production network:
- Drive Units & Axles: These components are manufactured at the Untertürkheim site, specifically drawing on expertise from the Mettingen and Hedelfingen sub-plants.
- Battery Systems: High-voltage batteries are produced by Accumotive in Kamenz, Saxony. With over 13 years of expertise in battery manufacturing, this facility serves as the central hub for the company's global battery production strategy.
By keeping these critical components within its own production network, Mercedes-Benz is reinforcing its vertical integration. This ensures that the new electric GLA not only delivers on range and performance but also meets the rigorous quality standards established across the brand's global manufacturing footprint.
Outlook and Availability
The retail rollout for the new GLA is slated for November, with the first units expected to hit dealership floors shortly thereafter. As the plant shifts its focus to include hybrid and combustion variants later in the year, the Rastatt facility is poised to become one of the most flexible multi-drive vehicle production hubs in the world.
