MAN has officially elevated the standards for heavy-duty electric transport with the launch of its upgraded eTGX long-haul truck. Introduced at the IAA Transportation event in Hanover, the revised platform addresses one of the most critical hurdles for zero-emission logistics: operational range. By integrating a new generation of high-density batteries and significant aerodynamic improvements, MAN has pushed the boundaries of what is possible for heavy-duty electric trucking.
The powertrain upgrade revolves around an enhanced NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) cell chemistry produced in-house at MAN’s Nuremberg facility. Each battery pack now offers 92 kWh of gross capacity, with an impressive 95 percent of that energy—88 kWh—being usable net capacity. This efficiency gain, paired with a newly designed front end that extends the vehicle by 120 millimeters for superior aerodynamics and improved driver visibility, allows the 6x2 configuration to achieve a range of up to 720 kilometers. For the standard 4x2 tractor, users can expect up to 660 kilometers, making reliable long-distance, emission-free logistics a current reality rather than a future promise.
2. MAN TGE Electrified by Flux
Expanding its electrification strategy beyond heavy freight, MAN is targeting the specialized municipal and emergency services sectors through a strategic partnership with the Swiss firm Flux. These near-series TGE transporters are designed to fill the gap for heavy-duty commercial vans that require higher gross vehicle weights, all-wheel drive, and specialized auxiliary power take-offs, features that have historically been difficult to electrify.
The showcased models, featuring gross vehicle weights of 4.0 and 5.5 tonnes, provide remarkable utility for demanding environments. Equipped with a 119 kWh battery, the vans achieve a range of up to 480 kilometers. Perhaps more critical for municipal operations, they support DC fast charging at 140 kW, allowing for a 10 to 80 percent charge in under 30 minutes. With a payload capacity reaching 2,500 kilograms and a towing capacity of 3,500 kilograms, these vehicles prove that electrification is no longer restricted to light-duty delivery, but is ready for rugged, industrial-grade applications.
