A New Chapter for Jetta
The Jetta brand, a strategic joint venture between FAW and Volkswagen, has officially marked its transition into the electrification era with the launch of pre-sales for its inaugural battery-electric vehicle, the M6 sedan. Positioned as an accessible, volume-oriented model, the M6 represents a major pillar in the brand's roadmap, which aims for an electrified fleet where four out of five planned models will be New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) by 2028.
With pricing set between 80,800 and 99,800 yuan (approximately 10,600 to 13,100 euros), the M6 is clearly aimed at budget-conscious consumers looking for modern, reliable electric mobility. This aggressive pricing strategy signals Jetta's intent to capture significant market share in the highly competitive Chinese entry-level segment, with long-term production targets set between 400,000 and 500,000 vehicles annually.
Engineering and Performance Specs
Built upon the proprietary Jiesi architecture, the Jetta M6 focuses on balancing efficiency and daily usability. The sedan features a front-wheel-drive powertrain, offering buyers a choice of two motor configurations: a 113 kW output or a more potent 145 kW peak power option. Performance metrics are solid for its class, with top speeds ranging from 166 km/h to 172 km/h depending on the specific motorization.
The vehicle's dimensions—measuring 4.81 meters in length and 1.90 meters in width—provide a spacious cabin footprint thanks to a 2.82-meter wheelbase. Weighing in between 1,557 and 1,628 kilograms, the M6 manages to keep its curb weight modest for an electric sedan of its size. For battery hardware, the vehicle utilizes cells sourced from CALB, though the final assembly of the battery packs is performed directly by the FAW-Volkswagen joint venture, ensuring quality control and integrated supply chain management.
Market Variants and Availability
Jetta is launching the M6 in three distinct trims: the 465 Pro, 555 Max, and 555 Ultra. These designations are derived from the vehicles' range capabilities as measured under the Chinese test cycle, suggesting a maximum range of 555 kilometers for the higher-tier models. This modular range approach allows the brand to cater to diverse customer needs, from city commuters to those requiring extra distance between charges.
The official market launch is set for mid-October, following an initial preview of the brand's electric ambition at the Beijing Auto Show earlier this year. As FAW-Volkswagen continues to pivot toward electrification, the M6 stands as the first tangible proof of the Jetta brand's ability to combine heritage engineering with modern EV technology for the mass market.
