GAC T9: The Future of Heavy Haulage
Stealing the spotlight at the IAA Transportation show is the GAC T9, a 6x4 tractor unit that brings a bold, angular aesthetic to the heavy commercial sector. With a design language characterized by sharp, diamond-cut surfaces that lean into a distinctly futuristic, cyberpunk style, the T9 is built to stand out on the highway. Beyond its looks, the T9 is engineered for extreme efficiency in two distinct, high-tech configurations.
The T9 Robotruck variant represents a significant leap forward in logistics, integrating advanced Level 4 autonomous driving technology developed in collaboration with Pony.ai. Built on a fully redundant, drive-by-wire chassis, the truck is equipped with an automotive-grade sensor suite featuring nine LiDARs, three radars, and 13 cameras. By focusing on hardware cost reduction, GAC claims this model cuts overall transport expenses by roughly 30 percent per tonne-kilometre, making autonomous long-haul and port-based logistics more commercially viable than ever before.
Complementing the robot-driven version is the T9 Battery Swap EV, which tackles the industry-wide challenge of charging downtime. This model features a massive 603-kWh battery, providing a range of up to 475 km. By utilizing Aulton’s rapid swapping infrastructure, the vehicle can have its entire battery replaced in just three to five minutes, allowing fleet operators to maximize uptime on fixed, high-frequency routes.
Montx: Redefining Light Commercial Mobility
GAC has also officially unveiled Montx, a dedicated sub-brand focused on the light commercial vehicle segment. The brand is built upon the proprietary All-Domain Adaptive Architecture (ADAA), a versatile platform designed to support various powertrain types and body styles, ensuring that the vehicles can be easily adapted to the regulatory and operational needs of diverse international markets.
At the forefront of this new brand are the P10 and V10 concept vehicles, which highlight the modular nature of the ADAA platform. To ensure these vehicles hit the mark for real-world operators, GAC is rolling out the 'Montx Makers' initiative, a co-creation program that invites commercial users to provide input during the development phase. This customer-centric approach aims to solve specific operational pain points before the vehicles reach mass production.
In addition to these concepts, the company is showcasing the production-ready Smilodon Pro pick-up. Having already established a footprint in the Middle East, Central, and South America, the Smilodon Pro is rapidly expanding its reach. GAC expects the rugged pick-up to be available in approximately 30 different countries by the end of 2026, signaling the company's aggressive strategy to become a major player in global commercial transport.
Why it Matters
GAC Commercial Vehicle’s debut at the IAA signifies a major push by Chinese manufacturers to capture the global heavy-duty logistics market. By blending cutting-edge autonomous hardware with modular architectures and rapid-swapping battery ecosystems, the company is positioning itself as a comprehensive solutions provider rather than just a truck manufacturer. The rapid 205% year-over-year sales growth reported by the brand highlights a strong demand for these scalable, tech-forward logistics solutions.
