Deepening the Battery Powerhouse
The electric vehicle landscape is witnessing a strategic consolidation as Seres and battery giant CATL have officially committed to a long-term partnership for the Aito brand. This agreement ensures that CATL will remain the primary battery supplier for Aito’s diverse range of battery electric vehicles and range-extended models. The collaboration is not merely a supply contract but a structural integration, characterized by an expansion of CATL’s innovative “plant-in-plant” manufacturing model directly at the Seres Super Factory in Chongqing.
To meet the surging demand for Aito vehicles, which have recently surpassed 1.2 million cumulative deliveries, the partners are launching a second phase of construction at the site. This expansion is set to boost annual battery production capacity to over 20 GWh. By manufacturing battery packs directly on-site at the vehicle assembly location, both companies are significantly reducing logistical overhead and enhancing the overall cost competitiveness of the Aito lineup.
The Road Ahead: Infrastructure and Global Markets
Beyond the core supply of power cells, the strategic roadmap between Seres and CATL includes an ambitious push into ecosystem-wide services. The two companies have signaled their intention to collaborate on fast-charging infrastructure and comprehensive battery lifecycle management. While the finer details regarding service locations and rollout timelines remain forthcoming, the intent is clear: to create a cohesive support network that keeps drivers on the road with minimal downtime.
International expansion is also a primary pillar of this new commitment. As Aito shifts its focus toward global markets—specifically in Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia—the partnership with CATL provides the technical stability required to scale operations outside of China. This comes on the heels of Aito’s recent successful market entry in the United Arab Emirates and signals a broader push for the brand under the Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance (HIMA).
Why It Matters
- Supply Chain Resilience: By integrating battery assembly directly into the vehicle production plant, the companies minimize disruptions and optimize JIT (just-in-time) manufacturing cycles.
- Economic Scale: Moving to a capacity of over 20 GWh creates significant economies of scale, essential for pricing future models aggressively.
- Global Ambitions: The partnership explicitly addresses the complexities of international expansion, providing a stable supply chain foundation for Aito's planned entry into the European and Central Asian markets.
- Technological Synergy: The use of CATL’s CTP 2.0 (Cell-to-Pack) technology ensures that Aito vehicles remain at the forefront of energy density and structural efficiency.
As Aito continues its rapid growth, bolstered by its recent five-year cooperation agreement with Huawei, this deepened integration with CATL serves as a critical move to maintain its competitive edge in a fast-evolving global mobility market.
