A Cinematic Software Overhaul
Rivian is embracing the spooky season with a major, cinematic software update that transforms its R1 and R2 electric vehicles into high-tech Ghostbusters command centers. In a partnership with Sony Pictures, the automaker has introduced an immersive Halloween experience that goes far beyond simple theme tweaks. By updating their vehicles to software version 2026.36.0 for R1 models or 2026.36.40 for the R2, owners can activate a range of visual and auditory features that pay homage to the 1984 cult classic.
The integration is deep, featuring a custom in-vehicle app that presents a retro-styled command console. Through a physical-looking red toggle switch on the interface, users can trigger the Trick or Treat mode, which synchronizes the interior lighting, themed audio, and exterior LED sequences to match the Ghostbusters aesthetic. The experience is enhanced by an eerie, seasonal voice for the Rivian Assistant, which can field requests to trigger specific light shows, explain scavenger hunt clues, or play iconic sound effects.
Interactive Features and Gaming
Beyond the ambient aesthetics, Rivian has packed the software with interactive elements to keep drivers and passengers entertained. An integrated Scavenger Hunt feature allows users to discover hidden digital assets, such as Ghost Guards or the iconic Slimer, embedded within existing interfaces like the Energy app, Drive Modes, and Gear Guard. When discovered, these hidden elements trigger unique animations and sounds, rewarding the observant user.
For those parked and waiting, the center display offers a mini-game titled 'Mallow Mash, a fast-paced challenge where players tap to pop Mini-Pufts marshmallow men against a ticking clock. The customization extends to the vehicle's exterior personality as well, with Motion Mode allowing the car to react with custom sounds and lights when it detects pedestrians passing by, perfect for driveway displays.
The Ecto-R1 Showcase
To celebrate the launch, Rivian has constructed a full-scale, drivable homage to the movie's legendary Ecto-1. Built upon the R1S platform, this custom SUV features a meticulously curated roof rack housing a radar dish, functional sirens, and restored emergency lights sourced directly from the original production era. The vehicle rides on 22-inch wheels equipped with white covers and proudly displays the iconic No-Ghost logo on its hood and doors.
This special build is currently touring Rivian retail spaces across the country, including locations in San Francisco, Austin, Miami, and New York City. These locations are hosting themed events, offering fans a chance to see the hardware up close, pick up limited-edition merchandise, and enjoy refreshments aligned with the Ghostbusters theme. This update will remain active for all eligible vehicles until November 2, 2026, marking one of the most comprehensive holiday-themed software deployments in the EV industry to date.
