A New Chapter for an Electric Icon
The Volvo EX40, formerly known as the XC40 Recharge, is receiving a major mid-cycle refresh that reinforces its status as a staple of the brand's electric portfolio. With production scheduled to commence this November and deliveries slated for the end of 2026, the updated compact SUV introduces a refined naming convention and a suite of technological enhancements designed to keep the model competitive for years to come. By aligning the EX40 nomenclature with the smaller EX30, Volvo is creating a more cohesive identity across its electric range.
Visually, the EX40 has undergone a transformation that brings it into closer alignment with its larger siblings, the EX60 and EX90. The exterior now features a more streamlined and futuristic interpretation of Volvo’s signature Scandinavian design. Notable changes include a completely redesigned front fascia with updated 'Thor’s Hammer' Matrix LED headlights, a new bonnet, and revised front wings. The rear of the vehicle has also been updated with refreshed LED taillights and a restyled bumper, providing a cleaner, more contemporary aesthetic.
Performance and Powertrain Upgrades
Beyond the cosmetic changes, Volvo has significantly bolstered the EX40’s performance capabilities. The model line is now split into three distinct powertrain variants: the P5 Electric, the P5 Long Range, and the P8 Performance AWD. The most dramatic hardware improvement is found in the top-tier P8 Performance AWD, which now delivers an impressive 325 kW of output—up from 300 kW. This power is split between a 135 kW front motor and a 190 kW rear motor, allowing for a blistering 0-100 km/h sprint of just 4.6 seconds.
Efficiency has also been a focal point for the base model. The entry-level P5 Electric now benefits from more efficient motors, squeezing an additional 10 kilometers of range from the 70 kWh battery, bringing the total to 477 kilometers under WLTP standards. Furthermore, Volvo has committed to standardizing convenience, now including a heat pump across the entire EX40 range. This ensures that the vehicle maintains optimal thermal efficiency regardless of external weather conditions, a vital feature for preserving range in colder climates.
Advanced Tech and Safety Integration
The cabin of the EX40 has received a major digital overhaul, centered around a new 11.2-inch infotainment screen. Running on a revised menu system, the vehicle now integrates Google Gemini, providing a more intuitive and responsive AI-assisted experience. Safety has also been upgraded via a new, more robust sensor platform that includes front and corner radars, additional ultrasonic sensors, and improved parking cameras.
These sensors power a new generation of active safety features, such as an automatic emergency steering assistant and an enhanced Pilot Assist system that now features an automated lane-change assistant. The addition of a 'Door Opening Alert' provides another layer of safety, notifying occupants of approaching cyclists or vehicles. With regular over-the-air (OTA) updates, Volvo intends to ensure that the EX40's software capabilities grow over time, allowing the vehicle to remain at the cutting edge of driver assistance and connectivity long after it leaves the showroom floor.
Why it Matters
- Unified Branding: Moving to the P5 and P8 naming convention simplifies the shopping experience and mirrors the global strategy applied to the EX30.
- Safety Standard: The massive sensor suite upgrade indicates Volvo’s commitment to maintaining its reputation as an industry leader in vehicle safety technology.
- Future-Proofing: The emphasis on OTA updates and the integration of Google Gemini ensure the car's software will evolve alongside consumer expectations.
