Volkswagen Group is reportedly exploring a strategic shift for its PowerCo battery cell factory currently under construction in Sagunto, near Valencia, Spain. According to recent industry reports, the German automotive giant is considering bringing its Chinese stakeholder, Gotion High-Tech, on board as a partner in the project.
A Potential Joint Venture
The move would transition the facility from a wholly-owned PowerCo operation into a joint venture. While construction is still ongoing, the inclusion of Gotion—in which Volkswagen holds a significant stake—could provide additional technical expertise and supply chain stability for the mass production of unified battery cells.
The Valencia site is a cornerstone of Volkswagen's electrification strategy in Europe, intended to supply batteries for a new generation of small electric vehicles. Neither party has officially confirmed the final terms of this potential partnership, but the shift reflects the deepening ties between European automakers and Chinese battery specialists to accelerate EV production scales.
