The Gist

Indian EV startup Ultraviolette Automotive is set to disrupt the high-volume electric two-wheeler market with a new 250,000-unit manufacturing hub in Tamil Nadu.

Scaling Up for Global Impact

Ultraviolette Automotive, the Indian electric vehicle innovator known for its high-performance motorcycles, is making a massive leap in its manufacturing capabilities. The company has announced plans to construct a state-of-the-art facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, internally codenamed 'BIGGA'—standing for 'Big Global Ambition.' This strategic expansion signals a pivot from strictly premium performance cycles to broader, high-volume market segments, including the rapidly growing electric scooter category.

The Tamil Nadu government confirmed that this ambitious project involves an initial investment of approximately 7.79 billion rupees (roughly €70 million). By positioning the plant in Hosur, Ultraviolette gains critical proximity to a well-established EV supply chain, placing it within a stone's throw of industry peers like TVS Motor Company and Ather Energy. The facility is designed for modular growth, with an initial annual production capacity target of 250,000 units, and the infrastructure is already being engineered to scale up to 500,000 units as global demand matures.

The Strategic Shift to Scooters

A central pillar of this expansion is the upcoming launch of 'The Tesseract.' With the Indian electric two-wheeler market overwhelmingly dominated by scooters—which accounted for nearly 89% of sales in 2025—The Tesseract represents Ultraviolette’s most significant step toward mainstream consumer adoption. The transition from pure-play performance motorbikes to functional, high-volume scooters is a calculated move to capture a larger slice of both domestic and international markets.

Alongside the greenfield project in Hosur, Ultraviolette is also pouring 2 billion rupees (about €18 million) into its existing Bengaluru facility. This investment will bump the plant's capacity from 30,000 to 50,000 units per year, ensuring that the company maintains momentum while the new factory comes online. These combined efforts reflect a comprehensive strategy to bolster its presence in India while simultaneously readying its lineup—including the X-47, the Shockwave enduro, and the F77—for a wider European rollout.

Why It Matters

  • Market Realignment: By pivoting to scooters, Ultraviolette is moving beyond the niche performance motorcycle segment into the largest volume category in the Indian EV market.
  • Strategic Ecosystem: Building in Hosur allows the company to tap into a matured automotive cluster, reducing logistics costs and streamlining supply chain operations.
  • Global Export Readiness: With the F77 already present in 19 European countries, the new production capacity is essential to support the planned entry of the Tesseract and the Shockwave into Western markets.
  • Investor Confidence: Backed by powerhouses like Qualcomm Ventures, TDK Ventures, and TVS Motor, the massive capital infusion demonstrates strong investor belief in the startup's transition to a high-volume manufacturing firm.
