The Gist

“Smart has officially opened pre-orders for its highly anticipated #2 electric two-seater, marking a return to the compact urban mobility that defined the brand.”

The Revival of Urban Agility

The automotive landscape is about to get a lot more compact as Smart officially opens the order books for its new #2 electric two-seater. Following its debut at the Paris world premiere, the vehicle is now available for reservation across key European markets, including Germany, France, and Italy. Positioned as a spiritual successor to the iconic Fortwo, the #2 embraces a footprint of just 2.79 meters, keeping the spirit of easy-to-park urban mobility alive in an era where most EVs are ballooning in size.

The vehicle is built upon a brand-new foundation called the Electric Compact Architecture (ECA). This platform manages to keep the kerb weight down to 1,140 kg while providing 305 liters of boot space. Power is derived from a 60 kW electric motor mounted at the rear axle, fed by a 35.7 kWh LFP battery supplied by CATL. This combination delivers a consistent WLTP-rated range of 290 km, making it an ideal candidate for city commutes and short-range regional travel.

The Four Trim Levels

Smart is segmenting its new release into four distinct trims, each designed to cater to different budget and comfort requirements. The base model, the Pure, kicks off at an aggressive €19,990, while the range-topping Couture Edition pushes the price to €25,690.

1. Smart #2 Pure

As the entry-level offering, the Pure represents one of the most affordable entry points into the new electric two-seater market. Despite its low price, it comes well-equipped for modern drivers, featuring a keyless entry system, built-in Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capabilities, and a suite of advanced driver assistance systems. Note that the Pure is limited to 7.4 kW AC charging, resulting in a five-hour charge time from 10 to 80 percent.

2. Smart #2 Pure+

Stepping up to the Pure+—priced at €20,990—brings significant improvements to the ownership experience. This trim upgrades the AC charging capability to 11 kW, cutting the 10-80% charge time down to three hours. It also adds creature comforts like a heated driver’s seat and expanded driver-assist features to enhance safety in dense traffic.

3. Smart #2 Premium

At €24,490, the Premium trim pivots toward luxury and aesthetics. It introduces a stunning fixed glass roof, high-quality artificial leather interior finishes, and an immersive seven-speaker sound system by Sennheiser. The Premium also opens up a wider range of exterior color combinations, allowing for more personalization compared to the base models.

4. Smart #2 Couture Edition

The top-of-the-line Couture Edition is a collector’s item, capped at a production run of just 999 units for the European market. It features a sophisticated Atelier White Matt exterior finish complemented by a striking Platinum Gold roof. Exclusive 16-inch alloy wheels distinguish this version, marking it as the definitive choice for those seeking the ultimate version of Smart’s latest design.

Performance and Charging Specs

While the charging speed varies for AC input, all models share a uniform DC charging architecture. The #2 can handle up to 65 kW of DC power, allowing for a 10 to 80 percent recharge in less than 20 minutes. This is a critical feature for a vehicle with a smaller battery pack, ensuring that replenishment is quick and hassle-free at public charging stations. Smart also offers a robust warranty, backing the battery for eight years or 200,000 km, with a commitment that the pack will maintain at least 70 percent of its health over that period.
