Renault has announced a significant software upgrade for its vehicle lineup, integrating Google Gemini AI to replace the traditional Google Assistant. The deployment, which began in mid-June as a free over-the-air (OTA) update, targets all models equipped with the OpenR Link infotainment system, ranging from the Twingo E-Tech Electric to the Rafale.
Enhanced Conversational Capabilities
Unlike previous voice systems, Gemini is designed to handle more natural, conversational interactions. Renault states that the AI can understand context, process complex requests, and execute multiple commands in sequence. This integration allows drivers to control core vehicle functions—such as climate control, navigation, radio, and specific vehicle settings—entirely through voice commands, reducing the need for manual inputs while driving.
Deep System Integration
A key differentiator in Renault's implementation is that Gemini is integrated directly into the vehicle's hardware rather than running through a mirrored smartphone interface like Android Auto. This deep level of access allows the AI to incorporate real-time vehicle data, such as battery range, into its route planning and navigation logic. Users must be logged into a Google account to activate the service, which operates on an opt-in basis to ensure customer choice regarding AI usage.
Future Roadmap
The update marks a continuation of Renault’s software evolution that began with the Mégane E-Tech Electric in 2022. Looking ahead, the automaker has already confirmed that "Gemini Live" will be added in a future update, enabling even more fluid, back-and-forth dialogue without the need for repeated wake words. This move aligns Renault with a broader automotive trend of leveraging generative AI to enhance the user experience inside the cabin.
