The company has officially announced a timeline extension for its massive gigafactory in St. Thomas, Ontario. While the site was originally slated to begin battery cell production in 2027, operations are now projected to kick off in 2029. This two-year pivot marks a significant adjustment to a project that has been widely viewed as a cornerstone of the Volkswagen Group’s North American electrification strategy.
PowerCo representatives have framed this delay as a calculated decision rather than a retreat. By pushing back the production start date, the company intends to integrate more advanced battery architectures directly into the facility’s workflow. This flexibility is critical in a market where rapid technological evolution can render manufacturing processes obsolete before they even begin. According to the company, the goal is to ensure the plant remains at the cutting edge of energy storage technology while allowing for scalable growth that aligns with fluctuating consumer demand for electric vehicles.

The facility remains vital for the North American market, intended to supply cells for various Volkswagen Group brands. Notably, the recently revived Scout brand is expected to hit the market in 2028. While these early Scout models will source batteries from other channels, the St. Thomas facility is being prepared to provide the high-volume, domestic cell supply necessary for the next generation of regional EV production throughout the turn of the decade.
