François Englert, the renowned Belgian theoretical physicist and 2013 Nobel Prize winner, has passed away at the age of 93. Englert was a monumental figure in the world of science, best known for his groundbreaking work on the Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism, which explains how subatomic particles acquire mass.
A Legacy in Particle Physics
In 1964, Englert and his colleague Robert Brout published research detailing a field that permeates the universe, interacting with fundamental particles to give them mass. This theory was developed independently and simultaneously by British physicist Peter Higgs. For decades, the existence of the associated particle—the Higgs boson—remained a theoretical cornerstone of the Standard Model of physics.
The Nobel Recognition
The theory was finally validated in 2012 when researchers at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider announced the discovery of a particle consistent with the Higgs boson. This monumental achievement led to Englert and Peter Higgs being jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2013. Robert Brout, who passed away in 2011, was also widely recognized for his essential role in the discovery.
