Scientists have discovered fossils in a New Zealand cave estimated to be around one million years old. The find reveals an ancient ecosystem and includes remains of a bird that may be the flying ancestor of the kākāpō, a flightless parrot native to New Zealand.
This discovery sheds light on how volcanic activity and climate shifts reshaped wildlife and caused extinctions long before humans arrived in the region.
