A NASA satellite observed a massive tsunami spanning the Pacific Ocean, triggered by a magnitude 8.8 earthquake near Kamchatka. The satellite’s unprecedented detailed imaging revealed unexpected tsunami wave behavior previously unseen by scientists.
These observations also indicated that the earthquake rupture was significantly larger than earlier seismic models had estimated. This new data offers important insights into tsunami generation and dynamics, improving future forecasting and hazard assessment.
