Scientists have confirmed that the Silverpit Crater beneath the North Sea was formed by an asteroid impact. The space rock, about 160 meters wide, hit the seabed approximately 43 to 46 million years ago.
This collision generated a massive tsunami exceeding 100 meters in height, reshaping the region's geology. The finding settles long-standing debates about the crater's origin, confirming it was caused by an extraterrestrial impact.
