A new modeling study has proposed an innovative approach to climate intervention: using marine cloud brightening to prevent the formation of a "super El Niño." By seeding clouds in the eastern Pacific with seawater aerosols, scientists believe they could create a cooling effect capable of shading the ocean and reducing the intensity of global temperature spikes.
Reflecting Sunlight to Cool the Pacific
The process involves spraying tiny salt particles into low-lying marine clouds to make them brighter and more reflective. According to the research, this targeted intervention could counteract the warming patterns typically associated with El Niño, potentially stabilizing regional and global climates during peak cycles.
Unintended Consequences
While the model shows promise for temperature regulation, the research team warns of significant risks.
