In a significant boost for Melbourne’s public transportation network, Kinetic, the region’s largest bus operator, has finalized comprehensive infrastructure upgrades at its Sunshine West depot. The project represents a fundamental shift in local transit capabilities, dramatically expanding the facility's ability to support an electrified fleet from just 24 buses to an impressive 66. This transition is part of a broader, government-backed initiative to modernize how residents in Melbourne move across the city.
By the conclusion of this year, the site is slated to house and charge 60 zero-emission vehicles. Looking further ahead, the infrastructure is engineered with significant "headroom," allowing it to accommodate up to 82 buses as the company continues to retire older diesel assets and phase in newer, greener technology. This foresight ensures that as the operator grows its fleet, the physical charging infrastructure will not become a bottleneck for deployment.
State-of-the-Art Charging Infrastructure
The modernization of the Sunshine West depot was a complex technical undertaking, delivered in collaboration with the Victorian government. The new site features advanced electrical architecture designed to streamline the transition to a sustainable fleet. Central to this setup are three overhead gantries equipped with 38 dedicated charge points, with physical space available to scale this to 54 points in the near future.
To complement this, Kinetic has integrated high-capacity opportunity charging via two dedicated fast chargers, allowing for rapid turnaround during peak operations. A second electrical kiosk was also commissioned to bolster the facility's overall power draw, ensuring that the heavy load of overnight charging does not stress the local utility grid. The entire system is managed by intelligent load-balancing software, which monitors energy consumption in real-time. This ensures that every bus is adequately charged to handle its morning route, all while maintaining strict compliance with the depot’s power capacity limits.
