Following its recent launch in the United Kingdom, Fiat is extending the reach of its electric Topolino to the United States. The Italian automaker has officially opened order books for the diminutive EV, marking a significant westward expansion for the brand's micro-mobility strategy.
A Restricted Launch
Despite being available for purchase, the Topolino faces a significant hurdle in the American market: it is not yet road-legal. Classified as an electric quadricycle in Europe, the vehicle does not currently meet the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards required for operation on public highways in the U.S.
This suggests that, for the time being, American buyers may be limited to using the vehicle on private property or within gated communities, similar to how low-speed vehicles (LSVs) or golf carts are utilized. Fiat has not yet detailed a specific timeline for achieving the regulatory compliance necessary for full street legality.
