The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially characterized the situation as currently out of control, warning that if the trajectory remains unchanged, this outbreak could surpass the devastating 2014-2016 West Africa epidemic, which claimed over 11,000 lives.

Because it involves the Bundibugyo virus, scientists are simultaneously conducting clinical trials to validate the efficacy of vaccines for this specific strain.

Dr. Placide Mbala Kingebeni, Africa CDC's director for research, clinical trials, and innovation, noted that while vaccination campaigns are expanding into Tshopo and Haut-Uele provinces, the mission is constrained by a limited supply of doses. With only 70,000 doses currently available for a massive, geographically dispersed population, securing and distributing further inventory remains a top priority for international health bodies. As the virus pushes deeper into North Kivu, the focus remains on stabilizing existing sites while attempting to curb the rapid migration of the virus into previously unaffected zones.
