The University of Zurich has launched a unique citizen science initiative, engaging over 1,000 volunteers to improve the understanding of soil health in Switzerland. Dubbed the 'Proof by Underpants' project, the study involves burying cotton underwear to track decomposition rates, which serve as indicators of soil biological activity.
Since its inception in 2021, participants have buried more than 2,000 pairs of cotton underwear at roughly 1,000 different sites throughout the country. After a two-month period, researchers observed varying decomposition rates linked to different land uses. Notably, gardens exhibited the quickest decomposition, whereas lawns showed the slowest rates.
