By comparing these marks to thousands of fossils found at Liang Bua cave on the island of Flores, the team found striking similarities. This suggests that Homo floresiensis likely waited for giant reptiles to finish their meals before moving in to scavenge the remaining meat.

Challenging the Mastery of Fire

The findings also challenge the narrative that the 'Hobbits' were masters of fire and big-game hunters. The lack of evidence for sophisticated hunting techniques for large animals, combined with the scavenging patterns, paints a picture of a species that relied on opportunistic feeding strategies to survive in a landscape dominated by formidable predators.
