The Evolution of the Volkswagen Electric Lineup
Volkswagen has officially introduced the ID. Tiguan, a strategic successor to the aging ID.4 electric crossover. Designed to address the specific pain points identified by owners during the ID.4's lifecycle, the new model promises a more intuitive user experience, premium materials, and enhanced functional utility. While the European market is set to receive the vehicle in early 2027, Volkswagen has confirmed that the ID. Tiguan is also slated for a future U.S. launch, signaling a renewed commitment to its electric mainstream strategy.
Refining the Human-Machine Interface
One of the most significant criticisms of the previous ID.4 model was its reliance on complex touch-sensitive interfaces, which often hindered usability. The ID. Tiguan corrects this course by reintroducing physical tactility. The steering wheel now features traditional button pads, and a dedicated row of physical buttons is positioned beneath the primary infotainment screen. Perhaps most welcomed by enthusiasts is the return of a dedicated volume knob located on the center console.
Inside the cabin, the technology suite has seen a complete overhaul. The vehicle features a multi-screen array, including a dedicated passenger-side display for entertainment and applications. The driver’s digital cluster and center infotainment screen offer enhanced customization, including a 'retro' mode that mimics the stylized virtual gauge clusters of classic Volkswagen vehicles. Furthermore, the interior ergonomics have been improved, with the removal of the contentious dual-switch window system in favor of a traditional four-switch setup.
Performance and EV-Specific Utility
Built on a platform that emphasizes both performance and efficiency, the ID. Tiguan will be available in rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations. Customers can choose between two battery capacities: a 58 kWh pack offering 187 horsepower, and a larger 77 kWh pack capable of delivering up to 294 horsepower in the AWD 4Motion trim. The 77 kWh model boasts an estimated range of up to 600 kilometers (372 miles) on the WLTP cycle, marking a notable efficiency improvement over its predecessor.
Beyond performance, the ID. Tiguan introduces practical features that were absent in the ID.4. The vehicle now includes a functional, albeit compact, 1.1-cubic-foot 'frunk' (front trunk) for additional storage. It also introduces one-pedal driving capability and vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, which allows owners to power external devices via an adapter connected to the charging port. With its more mature styling and upright, refined profile, the ID. Tiguan positions itself as a significant leap forward in Volkswagen’s efforts to dominate the compact electric crossover segment.
