Green Mountain Power (GMP) has reached a significant milestone in grid management, as its virtual power plant (VPP) has officially become the largest energy source in the state of Vermont. This decentralized network of home batteries and energy storage systems proved its worth during a severe heat wave in early July.
Economic and Grid Impact
According to reports from the utility provider, the VPP successfully reduced peak electricity costs by an estimated $6 million for all customers during the heat event. By tapping into stored energy in residential batteries during periods of high demand, the utility was able to avoid purchasing expensive and carbon-intensive power from the regional grid.
This shift toward decentralized energy demonstrates how networked home storage can replace traditional power plants while lowering costs and increasing resilience for the entire community. As extreme weather events become more frequent, Vermont's model offers a blueprint for other states looking to modernize their energy infrastructure.
