Taking the Reins: Leapmotor’s Strategic Pivot
Leapmotor is aggressively deepening its footprint in Thailand, transitioning from a third-party import model to direct operational control. By establishing Leapmotor (Thailand) Co., Ltd. with a capital injection of 100 million baht (approximately €2.6 million), the electric vehicle manufacturer is positioning itself for a long-term play in one of Southeast Asia’s most competitive automotive landscapes. While Phra Nakorn Automobile (PNA), the brand’s previous importer, remains part of the ecosystem as a dealer, the shift grants Leapmotor the autonomy necessary to execute an ambitious industrial strategy.
This move is underscored by the company’s intent to evaluate local assembly options. A specialized delegation from China is slated to visit Thailand this November to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study. The assessment will weigh four potential pathways for localization: engaging a contract manufacturer, forming a strategic joint venture, acquiring an existing facility, or breaking ground on an entirely new manufacturing plant. Initial targets for this production hub are set between 60,000 and 80,000 vehicles annually.
Why it Matters: A Blueprint for Regional Growth
Leapmotor’s decision to plant deeper roots in Thailand serves as a critical indicator of the brand's global scaling strategy. By aiming for local production, the company can navigate trade barriers, reduce supply chain volatility, and tailor its vehicle offerings more effectively to local consumer preferences. With the full backing of its board of directors and a streamlined funding process that allows for rapid budget approval, Leapmotor is clearly prioritizing the Thai market as a cornerstone of its international growth phase.
Market Expansion and Model Pipeline
The company’s growth plan is as aggressive as its manufacturing ambitions. Leapmotor entered the Thai market with the C10 mid-size SUV in late 2024 and expanded its lineup with the B10 compact SUV in October 2025. The upcoming launch of the B03X small SUV, scheduled for October 31, is expected to be a significant volume driver, contributing to the firm's goal of moving between 3,000 and 5,000 units by the end of this year.
- Ambitious Retail Goals: Scaling from 12 current showrooms to 100 locations by the end of 2028.
- Production Targets: Evaluating capacity for 60,000 to 80,000 units per year.
- Portfolio Growth: Expansion to include at least two additional new models in 2027.
- Sales Milestone: Targeting 10,000 annual vehicle sales by 2027.
As Leapmotor works to build a comprehensive network that covers everything from manufacturing to after-sales support, its presence in Bangkok is set to become a benchmark for its regional performance, aiming to replicate the multi-decade success seen by established automotive giants in the region.
