The Role of the Vagus Nerve
Researchers observed that rats exhibited significantly stronger memory-related neural activity after consuming nutritious meals. Interestingly, this effect was absent when the animals consumed sweet liquids with little to no nutritional value, suggesting the brain prioritizes memories associated with actual sustenance.
The study highlighted the critical role of the vagus nerve, which acts as a communication highway between the gut and the brain. When scientists blocked this nerve, the memory enhancement vanished, and the animals struggled to remember the locations where food had been found.

The research also carries a warning regarding modern eating habits. Long-term diets high in fat and sugar were found to weaken this gut-brain communication system.
