Lead author Santiago Ron traveled to the United Kingdom to examine 19th-century specimens—the original “type” specimens used by early naturalists to define species. By comparing these aging, preserved samples with vibrant, living populations observed in the field, the team realized that the original classifications had been fundamentally flawed. For over a century, the scientific community had been erroneously grouping this distinct population with an unrelated species, effectively hiding the frog in plain sight.
The Characteristics of the Milpe Robber Frog
The Milpe Robber Frog is a distinct inhabitant of the Chocó region, spanning a range of over 67,000 square kilometers from sea level up to 1,200 meters in elevation. Beyond its classification, the frog possesses several unique traits that help biologists identify it in the wild:
- Vocalizations: The males of the species are known for their distinct, loud, clicking calls, which they emit while perched on bromeliads or shrub leaves several meters above the forest floor.
- Sexual Dimorphism: The species exhibits clear physical differences between the sexes. While males tend to have more uniform coloring, females are marked by striking, high-contrast coloration around their thighs and groin, often featuring orange or light blue pigments set against deep black spots.
