A recent study has shed light on the safety and efficacy of psychotherapy for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in children and adolescents, finding that unwanted side effects are extremely rare. The analysis, which included 71 studies and over 5,600 patients, provides reassurance that psychological interventions are a safe and effective treatment option for young people with PTSD.
Key Insights
The study's key findings include the rarity of unwanted side effects, with less than 0.01% of patients reporting symptom deterioration after treatment, and the low occurrence of adverse events during psychological treatments, which affected only 0.29% of patients. These results suggest that psychotherapy for PTSD in children and adolescents is a safe and effective treatment option, with minimal risk of harm.
