Nio has announced plans to bolster its in-house technological capabilities by constructing a new research and development center for battery technologies in Shanghai. Scheduled for construction in the second half of the year, the facility represents a significant step in the automaker's strategy to secure its supply chain and innovate within the energy sector.
Advancing Next-Generation Cells
The new center will be specifically dedicated to the development of next-generation battery technologies. To support this mission, the site will house 31 specialized test laboratories, allowing engineers to conduct rigorous assessments of new chemistries and designs.
In addition to research spaces, the facility will feature a pilot production line for lithium-ion cells. This small-scale manufacturing capability is intended to bridge the gap between laboratory research and mass production, ensuring that Nio can refine its proprietary cell designs before committing to larger industrial scales.
