Unlike previous models that focused primarily on the horizontal drift of debris across the ocean surface, this new research accounts for waves that decay over time. The findings indicate that these decaying waves play a critical role in moving microplastic particles vertically, pushing them deeper into the water column or bringing them back toward the surface.
This vertical movement is essential for scientists trying to track the 'missing' plastic in the ocean, as a significant portion of plastic waste is known to exist beneath the visible surface. By accurately modeling these dynamics, environmental scientists can better predict where microplastic hotspots will form and how they might affect marine ecosystems at various depths.
