The Esslingen Municipal Transport Authority has officially received the first two battery-trolleybuses from Škoda Group, marking the beginning of a major fleet overhaul. This delivery is part of a larger contract for 52 vehicles designed to modernize the city's public transit infrastructure.
A Strategic Shift to Electric Transit
Esslingen has set an ambitious target to fully electrify its urban bus transport system by the end of 2026. The integration of Škoda’s battery-trolleybuses allows for flexible operation, utilizing overhead lines where available and switching to battery power for sections of the route without traditional electrification.
To support this transition, the city is simultaneously expanding its overhead line network. This dual approach ensures that the new fleet can maintain high efficiency and reliability as Esslingen phases out internal combustion engines in favor of sustainable, zero-emission solutions.
