Ireland’s transition to electric mobility reached a significant milestone this month as the new ICE2EV scrappage pilot program was fully subscribed within just one hour of its official launch. The rapid uptake underscores a high level of consumer interest in transitioning away from traditional internal combustion engine vehicles.
High Demand for BEV Incentives
The pilot program offered 2,000 successful applicants the opportunity to secure grants of up to €5,000. These funds are specifically designated to assist car owners in the purchase of new Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) when scrapping their older, higher-emission cars.
Government Review to Follow
Transport Minister Darragh O'Brien noted the unprecedented speed of the applications, stating that the government will now focus on assessing the results and data gathered from this pilot phase. The outcome of this assessment will likely determine the future scale and structure of similar green transport initiatives in Ireland.
