A recent test by Germany's ADAC has shed light on the hidden cost of home EV charging, revealing that some electric vehicles can lose up to 24.2% of the energy used during charging. The test compared the charging losses of five different EV models, including the Tesla Model Y, Mercedes-Benz CLA, and Renault 5, highlighting the importance of using a high-powered home charger to minimize energy losses and lower energy bills.
Key Insights
The test found that the Tesla Model Y had the lowest charging losses, with losses as low as 6.1% when using an 11 kW charger, while the Mercedes-Benz CLA had the highest charging losses, with losses of up to 24.2% when using a 2.3 kW mobile charger. These findings underscore the need for EV owners to consider the charging efficiency of their vehicles and invest in high-powered home chargers to reduce energy waste and save on their energy bills.
