New research published in eBioMedicine suggests that the widely used omega-3 fatty acid, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), may not provide the cognitive benefits many consumers expect. The study, released online on June 18, investigated the effects of high-dose DHA supplementation over a 24-month period.
No Significant Changes Observed
Researchers monitored participants to track potential changes in both brain volume and cognitive performance. Despite the high dosage administered, the study found no measurable improvement or significant change in these areas compared to control groups. This data challenges previous assumptions regarding the efficacy of DHA as a primary intervention for cognitive enhancement in the general population.
While DHA remains a critical component of brain health, these findings indicate that long-term supplementation in high doses does not necessarily translate to improved mental acuity or structural brain preservation over a two-year window.
