Neptune Energy's Ambitious Lithium Play in Germany
The global race for electric vehicle (EV) battery materials is heating up, and Neptune Energy is positioning itself to be a key player in Europe's domestic supply chain. The company has announced significant progress on its Altmark Lithium Project in Germany, with an ambitious target to begin commercial production by 2030. This initiative could provide a crucial boost to the continent's self-sufficiency in critical raw materials, a strategic imperative given current geopolitical landscapes.
At the heart of Neptune Energy's strategy is the innovative application of Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technology. This cutting-edge method allows for the extraction of lithium precursors directly from deep thermal water found beneath the Altmark region. Unlike traditional hard-rock mining or large-scale brine evaporation ponds, DLE promises a more environmentally friendly and efficient process, significantly reducing the ecological footprint associated with lithium production. The company is collaborating closely with Fraunhofer IEG, a renowned research institution, to refine a suitable adsorption process tailored for the unique characteristics of the Altmark thermal water.
The scale of this project is impressive. Neptune Energy aims to produce up to 25,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) annually. To put this into perspective, this volume is projected to be enough to supply the batteries for approximately 500,000 electric vehicles each year. Such a significant domestic source would not only reduce Europe's reliance on imported lithium but also contribute to a more resilient and sustainable EV manufacturing ecosystem within the region. As the demand for EVs continues its exponential growth, securing a stable and ethical supply of lithium is paramount, and the Altmark project signals a major step forward for Germany and wider Europe.
