New research involving 225 newborns suggests that prenatal estrogen levels may have been a significant factor in the evolution of larger human brains. The study focused on finger-length patterns, which serve as a biological marker for hormone exposure during fetal development.
The Connection Between Hormones and Head Size
According to the findings, male infants with finger-length ratios associated with higher prenatal estrogen exposure tended to have larger head circumferences. Because head circumference is a reliable proxy for overall brain size, researchers believe this hormonal influence could be a missing piece in understanding human cognitive development.
Gender-Specific Findings
Interestingly, the correlation was observed exclusively in boys. The same connection between finger-length patterns and head size was not present in the girls included in the study. This suggests that the evolutionary mechanisms driving brain expansion may have operated differently across sexes or were specifically influenced by male-specific hormonal pathways during gestation.
