A new report suggests that the European Union is investigating the implementation of satellite-based detection systems designed to enforce speed limits automatically. Under the proposed framework, if the system detects that a vehicle is traveling above the legal limit, it could trigger a reduction in the car's power output to bring it back into compliance.
Automated Speed Enforcement
The core of the technology involves real-time communication between vehicles and satellite networks. Unlike current Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) systems, which often rely on cameras and GPS maps to warn drivers, this proposed measure would take a more active role in vehicle control. By limiting the power output directly, the system would prevent the driver from maintaining an illegal speed.
Regulatory Goals
The initiative is part of a broader push by European regulators to improve road safety and reduce traffic fatalities. While modern cars already feature various driver-assistance technologies, a satellite-linked power override would represent a significant shift toward automated regulatory enforcement on public roads.
