As electric vehicle (EV) adoption grows, range anxiety remains a primary concern for many drivers. A new DIY project is gaining attention for attempting to solve this issue using off-the-shelf technology: portable battery banks. The experiment investigates whether these mobile power sources can act as a viable 'reserve tank' for EVs during long-distance travel.
The Concept of a Portable Range Extender
The project involves connecting high-output portable power stations to the vehicle's charging system while stationary or, in more complex setups, while in motion. While most EVs are designed to be charged via dedicated wall boxes or public infrastructure, the use of large-scale power banks offers a flexible, albeit slower, alternative for emergency situations or off-grid travel.
